The German PostgreSQL User Group has applied for a stand at Cebit 2010. Now we got the confirmation that PostgreSQL will have a stand in hall 2 in the "Project Lounge".

Cebit 2010 takes place in Hannover, Germany, from march 02 to 06, in the exhibition center.

Der FaRaFIN der Universität Magdeburg veranstaltet zusammen mit der Firma Sirenen - bewusste Sicherheit eine Veranstaltung zum Thema E-Mail Sicherheit sowie eine Keysigning-Party.

Das Seminar ist am Dienstag, dem 19.01.2010 um 18:00 Uhr im Gesellschaftshaus Magdeburg. Mehr Infos unter: Link.

RoboCup German Open 2010 in Magdeburg

Nachdem der vorherige Veranstalter den RoboCup nicht mehr austragen wollte, wurde Magdeburg für die Veranstaltung im Jahr 2010 als Veranstaltungsort ausgewählt. Das ist eine gute Gelegenheit für unsere Stadt, bei dem international anreisenden Publikum einen guten Eindruck machen.

Die Veranstaltung findet vom 15. bis 18. April 2010 in den Messehallen statt. Da sollte ich mal schauen, ob man dafür Eintrittskarten braucht - und rechtzeitig welche besorgen.

Brandenburger Linux-Infotag 2009

Kurzfristig hatten meine Frau und ich uns gestern abend entschieden, doch zum Brandenburger Linux-Infotag zu fahren. Aufgrund diverser Vorfälle in den letzten Wochen war bis gestern unklar, ob wir überhaupt dorthin fahren können. Letzten Endes hat das aber doch gut geklappt.

In Potsdam bescherte uns das Navigationssystem erst mal eine Überraschung: mitten auf der falschen Straße war es der Meinung, dass wir jetzt angekommen sind. Nach einigen Verwirrungen und der Neueingabe der Adresse fanden sich dann aber doch die letzten zwei Kilometer bis zum endgültigen Ziel. Die Veranstaltung fand auf dem Gelände der Universität Potsdam in Potsdam-Babelsberg statt, dort wo auch das Hasso-Plattner-Institut angesiedelt ist.

Die Veranstaltung selbst kannten wir noch nicht, daher ist zu den Teilnehmerzahlen keine Aussage möglich. Allerdings sah das Gebäude nicht schlecht besucht aus und zu allen Zeiten waren interessierte Besucher an den Ständen anzufinden. Ein Team mit Kamera und Moderator ist auch herumgegangen und hat die Mitarbeiter an jedem Stand interviewt.

Der IPv6-Security Vortrag hat mir von den besuchten Vorträgen am meisten gefallen, aber leider ist der Vortrag zum Thema Marketing für Open Source Projekte ausgefallen. Das hätte mich noch mehr interessiert.

Alles in allem eine gut organisierte regionale Veranstaltung, die durchaus noch mehr Zulauf verdient.

Ein besonderer Dank geht an dieser Stelle an die Kinderbetreuung. Dadurch war es uns möglich, parallel verschiedene Vorträge zu besuchen und unser Kleiner hatte seinen Spaß und wurde professionell behütet.

PGDay.EU 2009 in Paris (and the 200 meters issue)

PGDay.EU 2009 in Paris is over. It was a very thrilling conference with many impressions and interesting talks. But in sequence.

We (my wife, my son plus me) had met Andreas Kretschmer and his family on the Düsseldorf airport and headed together to Paris. In the evening Andreas and i reached the Dalibo office (on the way we could gaze in wonder about the impressive theft protection for the cars) just to find out that everyone is already in the restaurant ;-)

On thursday we helped preparing the conference, David already blogged about his experience with nerds and logistics. Oh, and if a french is telling you "in 200 meters" - never ever trust him. Multiply the number by 5 or 6, that's probably the correct distance. It's like "10 italian minutes" last year in Prato ;-) By the way, the shortest path to the restaurant (near the hotel) is not a short walk. No, it's a round trip using the Metro, followed by a longer walk including several "200 meters" units. That's the experience we gained on the way to the restaurant where everyone was meeting this evening.

Friday started with hecticness: every visitor was to register, name tags was to cut out and assemble (yes, David, i will start even more in advance with the name tags next year ;-) ), find the fitting shirt for every visitor, and the rooms was to be prepared too. The conference itself started with an opening session by Magnus and Jean-Paul, followed by Simon's very promising talk, where he showed a short overview over the last 20 years and gave a view forward on his ideas for the next 20 years. I spent the forenoon on booth duty on the PGEU stand, until we got (about noon) the two long-missing parcels with elephants. I sent two boxes with elephants (using DHL) to Paris two weeks ago. On thursday, the online tracking told us: "delivery failed", which gleu solved by calling DHL and the France postal service several times on thursday afternoon. "Just in time" one might think, but actually i prefer two or three days in advance. The 20 elephants found a new home in less than one hour.

The day ended (more exactly: the evening started) with a party, sponsored by EnterpriseDB, in the Les funables restaurant, near the venue, operated by Ivanne et Sidonie. That's the same company which did the catering for the conference and i have to admit i never attended a conference which such a good food. I should not forget to tell about the cute kids shirts, weared by Andreas' daugther and our son (well, actually, someone have a good picture with the kids+shirt on it for me?) For anyone who asked: the shirts are made in a good copy-shop in my hometown (same shop which prints my training documents). And yes, we try to have some of the shirts for FOSDEM.

On saturday we also had the developer room, which hosted interesting technical talks, in addition to the french and english track. The closing session in the amphie theathre started with the group picture, followed by an auction for the two big blue plush elephants. Sean from EnterpriseDB gave both elephants a new home, thanks a lot for this.

The lightning talks were very exhilarative. I remember (among others) Davids talk about Lolcats and how to do a lightning talk, as well as Gaviks talk - who wasn't there. The talk was - in general amusement - given by Gregory (powerpoint karaoke anyone?). Last but not least there was the Thank You to everyone who helped making the PGDay such a great success, followed by the invitation to the netherlands next year (probably in Amsterdam, probably in october).

Die Chemnitzer Linuxtage 2009 sind vorbei und es war wie jedes Jahr ein sehr spannendes und informatives Wochenende. Die Besucherzahlen haben das letzte Jahr noch überboten, die Orga hat zum Ende der Veranstaltung eine Zahl von 2600 Teilnehmern (2200 letztes Jahr) genannt.

PostgreSQL shared a developer room together with the *BSD groups and we also had a booth where many visitors passed by and stopped for asking questions or buing some of our merchandising stuff.

Die Open Source School in München bietet Ende März wieder eine PostgreSQL Schulung an. Der Themenumfang wird sich gegenüber der letzten Schulung nicht ändern, allerdings können - wie gehabt - die Teilnehmer Wünsche zu besonderen Themen äußern.

Vorkentnisse zu PostgreSQL sind nicht notwendig, der Teilnehmer sollte allerdings grundlegend mit Linux umgehen können.

Update: Der Kurs wurde auf Juni verschoben, da ein anderer Kurs die Räumlichkeiten benötigt.

FOSDEM 2009 will take place february 7-8 2009 in Brussels, Belgium.
Like last year we expect to have a booth and a devroom, the latter one together with the BSD groups.

Talks:

Also like last year we will have a series of talks and we are now accepting submissions. If you are a developer, DBA, a vendor or just a user who knows about a cool topic now it is your time to share with the community. If you are unsure if your topic fills an entire talk we also offer lightning talks.

Please submit your talk(s) to fosdem@postgresql.eu, include the topic and the length of the talk. You may choose between:

- 60 minutes talk (~45 minutes talk + 15 minutes discussion)
- 30 minutes talk (~20 minutes talk + 10 minutes discussion)
- lightning talk (5 minutes, cut short)

Booth:

We also need people for booth duty! Many visitors stop by our booth and ask interesting questions. We also sell cool merchandising stuff. If you want to help please let us know: fosdem@postgresql.eu

Hotel:

Just like 2008 we will try to book rooms for everyone in one hotel. If you need a place to sleep please drop us a mail timely at fosdem@postgresql.eu and include the number of individuals, the room type (single, double) and the date of arrival and leave.
