In one of my earlier blog posts I reported that occasionally the HABpanel will disconnect from the server. Turns out it’s not HABpanel, but it’s the Pi itself which is causing the trouble. Part of the problem why it took me so long to investigate is that the display is in the kitchen, and someone had to have a look and spot the small red error message. To work around that problem, I hooked the device up in the network monitoring, and had an alarm triggered when the device is not reachable. Sure enough, that happens occasionally.

Because I moved /var/log to a small RAM disk to avoid wearing out the SDcard, all logs are lost once the device is rebooted. Had to bring keyboard and mouse to the kitchen in order to save the logfiles once the device was no longer reachable over the network.

Turns out it’s a well-known problem with the network chip on the Raspberry Pi. One of the GitHub issues is open since 2018, the other one since 2019. So no hope for a real quick fix :-(

About two years ago, I wrote about a long list of annoying features in my then Samsung S5 device (company issued). A while ago I got a Samsung S6 - so it’s time to see if Samsung came around and fixed items on the list.

The good news is that some of the really annoying “features” are gone. No more unnerving sounds when the device is fully charged, no more mandatory warning about sealing the USB port cover when unplugging from the charger (this might have to do with the fact that the S6 is no longer waterproof). Lock screen timeout slightly increased, but you also have to slide up to unlock the device - it no longer presents the keyboard by default. S Finder is gone - who did ever use this one anyway?

Android is a very nice operating system, people like it because it’s highly configurable. One of the major players in this game - Samsung Mobile - annoys it’s users with certain “features”, which you mostly can’t switch off or get rid off.

Even more annoying - for me - that’s the only Android option I get offered by my employer. The alternatives are iPhone, or Blackberry. So not really an option. Two years ago I switched to a Samsung S3, and a few weeks ago it was time to renew the contract, so shortly before Christmas there was a box with a shiny new S5 waiting for me in the office. Using the new mobile for two weeks now, I realized that Samsung remains true to themself and added more annoying functionality over the past two years.

Samsung is churning out dozens of different mobile devices every year. Maybe they should hire a few User Interface designers, or simply start using their own stuff, and see how annoying it is to use.

Ich wollte den Tarif für mein Handy wechseln. Hätte ich gewusst welche unüberwindlichen Hürden mir Vodafone Deutschland da in den Weg legt - ich hätte den Vertrag besser gleich gekündigt.

Zur Vorgeschichte: einen Vertrag kann man bei Vodafone Deutschland offensichtlich nur frühzeitig (im Zeitraum 3 Monate vor Ablauf) verlängern, wenn man ein neues Handy dazu nimmt. Will ich nicht. Jetzt ist der Vertrag abgelaufen und ich möchte nur den Tarif wechseln. So weit meine Exkursionen durch die Instanzen:

Mein Internet war plötzlich tot. Von einem Moment auf den anderen. Was war passiert und wie ist das zu reparieren?

Derzeit besteht der Internetanschluß aus einer AVM FRITZ!Box 7390 und einem UMTS-Stick am USB Port. Das ganze lief mehrere Tage fehlerfrei, bis heute nachmittag. Im Log der FRITZ!Box stand bloß “UMTS-Modem Initialisierung fehlgeschlagen”, nichts weiter. Abziehen und anstecken des UMTS-Sticks sowie Reboot der Box brachte immer das gleiche Ergebnis. Konfiguration gesichert, Box auf Werkseinstellungen zurück gesetzt, Konfiguration wieder eingespielt: immer noch das gleiche Problem. Der UMTS-Stick an einem Rechner funktioniert. Irgendetwas ist mit der FRITZ!Box faul.

Seit einiger Zeit bekam ich als Moderator auf der Xing Plattform immer mal wieder Hinweise darauf, das bald alles besser werden würde. Einige Rundschreiben gab es, sowie die Möglichkeit sich das vorab anzuschauen. Hätte ich das mal getan …

Xing ist da der ganz große Wurf gelungen. Wirklich! Glaubt mir!

Also, jedenfalls wenn man den derzeitigen Marktführer in Sachen sozialer Netze kopieren will.

Manche Restaurants werden mit der Zeit schlechter, nicht besser.

Aber von Anfang an: die Frauen hatten beschlossen, dass wir mal wieder Essen gehen könnten. Das passende Restaurant wurde auch gleich ausgewählt: Restaurant Adria in Schönebeck/Elbe.

Die deutsche Wikipedia hat es wieder mal geschafft: einige bekannte Open Source Veranstaltungen wurden wegen Irrelevanz gelöscht.

Wir hatten ja mit dem Navigon schon viel Spaß (siehe hier und hier). Nun sind während des heißen Sommers im Fuß der Fahrzeughalterungen sämtliche Befestigungen für die dort eingebaute Feder gebrochen - das Plastik sah geschmolzen und porös aus. Nun denn, Kaufbeleg herausgesucht und ins Geschäft. Bei der Gelegenheit wurde das gesamte Gerät eingeschickt und die bereits bekannten Probleme wurden reklamiert.

Am gestrigen Montag war Xing Magdeburg Stammtisch angesagt. Diesmal hat es uns in das Café Canapé auf der Großen Diesdorfer Straße in Magdeburg verschlagen.

Vorneweg: Bis vorgestern ist es uns in Magdeburg nur einmal passiert, dass wir nichts zu Essen bekommen haben. Nun steht der Zähler bei zwei.
