Arch Linux: mount: unknown filesystem type 'exfat'

A short while ago I moved a couple of laptops from Ubuntu to Manjaro (that’s an Arch Linux distribution). It’s all going well, except today the kid came to me and told me: “Can’t open the SDcard from my camera. It’s not working.”

Logo of an SDcard with exFAT written on it

Don’t you like it when all you get is “it doesn’t work”? Usually such a message by itself is not helpful, but in this case that was all he was able to tell me. Checked and indeed, when the card reader is attached, KDE pops up a notification, and the “mount and open” option does nothing when clicked on the drive. The systemd journal is also not helpful:

Tried it manually:

1
2
3
$ sudo mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt/
mount: /mnt: unknown filesystem type 'exfat'.
       dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

exFAT support is installed, or so I thought:

$ sudo pacman -Ss exfat
extra/exfat-utils 1.4.0-3
    Utilities for exFAT file system
extra/exfatprogs 1.2.4-1 [installed]
    exFAT filesystem userspace utilities for the Linux Kernel exfat driver

Previously on the Ubuntu laptop I had the following packages installed, according to the Ansible playbook:

  • exfat-fuse
  • exfatprogs

There’s no exfat-fuse in arch, but there is a exfatprogs package, and it’s installed. Apparently I need the other package, extra/exfat-utils. Which I can’t install:

1
2
3
4
5
$ sudo pacman -S exfat-utils
resolving dependencies...
looking for conflicting packages...
:: exfat-utils-1.4.0-3 and exfatprogs-1.2.4-1 are in conflict. Remove exfatprogs? [y/N] y^C
Interrupt signal received

Is anything depending on this exfatprogs package?

Doesn’t look like. Let’s uninstall it, and install the extra/exfat-utils package:

Suddenly the mount command works:

1
2
3
4
5
$ sudo mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt/
FUSE exfat 1.4.0 (libfuse3)
$ sudo ls /mnt/
 DCIM   MISC  'System Volume Information'
$ sudo umount /mnt

Summary

In Arch Linux and Manjaro I need the extra/exfat-utils package for exFAT support, not the extra/exfatprogs package.

And KDE is not helpful by not providing visual feedback why the drive can’t be mounted.
