While upgrading my Pihole from 5.x to 6.x I ran into a nuisance: the session timeout for the web interface is really short.

The Pihole 5.x had a checkbox: “Remember me for 7 days”, which is fine.

This checkbox is no longer available on the 6.x web interface. Instead the default is 1800s, or half an hour. This is annoyingly short.

On the plus side: the session timeout is now configurable.

Change the session timeout for the Pihole login

Follow these steps:

  • Login into the Pihole web interface
  • Go to “Settings”
  • Click on “All Settings”
  • Click on “Webserver and API”
  • Find “webserver.session.timeout”

The session timeout is specified in seconds. Once a session is inactive for longer than the specified amount of time, the user will be logged out.

Change the value to a more appropriate time:

  • 3600 = one hour
  • 28800 = eight hours (approx. a working day)
  • 86400 = one day
  • 604800 = one week (7 days)
  • 2592000 = one months (30 days)

The default is 1800.

In my case I go with one week.
