Pat Wright is running this month’s #PGSQLPhriday, and the topic is “What is the PostgreSQL Community to you?”
The answer for me is very versatile, and covers quite a lot. Took me a moment to gather the facets, and likely I’m still missing some parts.
The PostgreSQL community for me is friends, databases, events, learning, speaking, teaching, writing, and much more.
Together with Lætitia Avrot and Nikolay Samokhvalov I was invited to participate in a Community Panel (YouTube video) about PostgreSQL Upgradability at Postgres Vision 2022. The panel was moderated by Bruce Momjian and initiated and organized by Jimmy Angelakos. Bruce did talk with each of us before, which helped a lot to guide the discussion in the right direction. The recording of the panel discussion is available on the Postgres Vision website.
During this panel each of us provided examples for how easy or complicated PostgreSQL upgrades still are.
I had the honor to present at PgConf.Russia 2016. It’s probably the biggest PostgreSQL conference in Europe (News report), even bigger than pgconf.eu. It shows that PostgreSQL, and Open Source in general, has a big and growing market share. Was the first time that I travelled to Russia, and as with almost every new country, it is incredible. Also it is nice to be not in charge for a conference, and to enjoy the time attending talks, discuss with others or get stuff done.
FOSDEM PGDay is a one day conference that will be held ahead of FOSDEM in Brussels, Belgium, on Jan 29th, 2016. This will be a one-day focused PostgreSQL event, with a single track of talks. Registration is required to attend, the registration will open soon. Since we have a limited number of seats available for this event, we urge everybody to register as soon as possible once open.
PostgreSQL Europe will also have our regular devroom at FOSDEM on Sunday the 31st, which will be held at the main FOSDEM venue at ULB. This day will, of course, continue to be free of charge and open to all FOSDEM entrants. No registration is required to attend this day.

You might have guessed it, yesterday’s announcement about the PGDay Caribbean 2014 was an April joke.
I’ve got this idea back at FOSDEM 2014 when we discussed possible options for our European PostgreSQL Conference this year (and no, this conference will certainly not take place in the Caribbean).
PGDay Caribbean 2014 is a one day PostgreSQL conference which takes place on August 1st, in the beautiful city of St. Martin in the Caribbean. The event follows a well known pattern from other PGDay events: great talks, good community, drinks - and we add summer and sunshine on top.
FOSDEM PGDay is a one day conference that will be held ahead of FOSDEM in Brussels, Belgium, on Jan 31st, 2014. This will be a one-day focused PostgreSQL event, with a single track of talks. This conference day will be for-charge and cost 50€, and will be held at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in downtown Brussels. Registration is required to attend. Was the first time that I actually had the chance to attend CHAR(11). For various reasons (speak: my wife had tickets for a musical) I could not attend last year.
