In 2019 I was in Cuba for a conference that took place there.

During the preparation of the trip it occured to me that internet access in the country is on the one hand slow and not well developed. On the other hand, that mobile internet access via roaming is obscenely expensive. It was foreseeable that I would have to do without mobile internet for a week, and consequently without online navigation. Preparations are in order.

These preparations were divided into two areas: before the trip and during the trip. For a while I thought about buying a map (this paper thing that you hold in your hand), but outside of Cuba you can’t find good maps for tourists which you can buy in advance. And the available maps looked rather outdated, and without enough details. As a result, I scratched this option from the list.

Bei der Vorbereitung der Reise stellte sich heraus dass der Internetzugang im Land einerseits langsam ist, und nicht gut ausgebaut. Und andererseits dass der mobile Internetzugang über Roaming obszön teuer ist. Es war also abzusehen dass ich eine Woche ohne mobiles Internet auskommen muss, und demzufolge auch ohne online Navigation. Vorbereitungen waren notwendig.

Die Vorbereitungen teilten sich in zwei Bereiche: vor der Reise, und während der Reise. Kurz hatte ich überlegt ob ich eine Karte kaufe (dieses Ding aus Papier welches man in die Hand nimmt), aber es gibt außerhalb Kubas kein gutes Kartenmaterial für Touristen. Das was an Karten verfügbar war sah eher veraltet aus. Demzufolge habe ich diese Option wieder verworfen.

Cuba is still a developing country in terms of Internet access. For a few years tinternet was only available via satellite, and that was slow. There are now a few submarine cables, which has improved the speed, reliability and accessibility. Internet access in Cuba is basically offered by the state provider ETECSA. The internet available in hotels is just passed through to the provider as well.

Kuba ist, was den Zugang zum Internet betrifft, immer noch ein Entwicklungsland. Für einige Jahre gab es nur Internet über Satellit, und das war entsprechend langsam. Mittlerweile gibt es Seekabel, was die Geschwindigkeit, Stabilität und Erreichbarkeit verbessert hat. Der Internetzugang in Kuba wird grundsätzlich vom staatlichen Anbieter ETECSA angeboten. Auch das Internet in Hotels läuft letztendlich darüber.

Cuba has two currencies that you come into contact with as a tourist. One is the “local” currency, the Cuban Peso (CUP). The other one is the Convertible Peso (CUC), which is used for everything related to tourism.

Kuba hat gleich zwei Wärungen, mit denen man als Tourist in Kontakt kommt. Das ist zum einen die “einheimische” Währung, der Kubanische Peso (CUP). Und zum anderen der Konvertible Peso (CUC), welcher bevorzugt für alles rund um den Tourismus in Frage kommt.

Geocaching in Cuba is not very common, which may be due to limited Internet offerings, and the partially poorly developed infrastructure. Most caches exist in and around major cities and well-known resorts (Havana, Cayo Santa María, Guardalavaca, Cardenas, Pinar del Río). There are also some caches in and around Guantánamo Bay, but these can only be reached from the local Naval Base. Not for tourists …

Geocaching in Kuba ist nicht sehr verbreitet, was vielleicht auch den Einschränkungen des Internetangebots sowie der teilweise schlecht ausgebauten Infrastruktur geschuldet sein dürfte. Die meisten Caches gibt es in und um einigen größeren Städten und bekannten Urlaubsgebieten (Havanna, Cayo Santa María, Guardalavaca, Cardenas, Pinar del Río). Weiterhin gibt es einige Caches in und um Guantánamo Bay, aber diese sind nur von der dortigen Naval Base aus zu erreichen. Also nichts für Urlauber …
